Ailie Robertson is an accomplished musician
who has been playing the harp from an early
age and developed into one of Scotland’s
leading harpists. She has some extremely
impressive credentials for her name; BBC
Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician
of the Year finalist; first prize at the inaugural
London Harp Competition; the title of
best overall musician at the Edinburgh
Competition Festival. Ailie has given recitals
all over Scotland, including a performance
for the Queen. Despite these high profile
engagements, Ailie likes nothing better than
playing during a couple’s big day. “I love
seeing people’s reactions when they first hear
the harp,” she says. “There are often a few
tears shed!” Ailie has found that her instrument
helps create a romantic atmosphere: “It
works well not just for ceremonies, but also
for background music during the champagne
reception and wedding breakfast.”
With a repertoire encompassing classical, jazz
and traditional Scottish music, she can easily
create a specially tailored programme, which is
probably why she gets booked for such a wide
variety of weddings. As she points out, “The
harp is ideally suited to all sorts of venues,
from churches and cathedrals, to castles
and even boats! It’s always a talking point for
guests, as it’s such a beautiful and unique
instrument.”
