John Mackintosh has been playing bagpipes since childhood and recognises how lucky he has been in having the opportunity to continue this professionally throughout his working life. John has piped within the British Army and the Edinburgh City and Lothian & Borders police forces; since retiring he’s taken up the post of Head of Bagpipe Studies for the Sultan of Oman’s Armed Forces. He is now helping to develop the skills of a new generation of pipers, in his capacity as Pipe Major of the Edinburgh Universities OTC. During his years competing as a solo and pipe band musician, John has won many prizes, including the World Pipe Band Championships on several occasions, and his talents have taken him all over the world, with regular performances for various Heads of States and prestigious International Organisations. John is now also very much in demand closer to home, and takes great pleasure in entertaining people at Scottish weddings. As someone who is used to jetting halfway across the world to play, it’s no problem for John to travel across Scotland at short notice. As well as punctuating a couple’s wedding day with appropriate piping in all the right places, John is happy to proudly propose a Gaelic toast to the newlyweds as they take their place at the top table.
