StringsAloud is a young funky string quartet who – despite only being around since 2005 – have played at an impressive 250 weddings, not to mention performances for the likes of Snow Patrol and Fred McAulay. Certainly one reason for their popularity is sheer versatility; whether you’re looking for an original arrangement, angelic ceremonial music, upbeat classics, jazz or contemporary favourites, they are happy to oblige. They even played Pachebel’s Canon from a moving open-topped bridal car once! And requests don’t always have to be planned in advance. As violinist Mairi Hunter-Barr says, “Requests are our speciality; we are constantly updating our repertoire list – we’ve done it all, from the Foo Fighters to ‘Phantom of the Opera’. But the best one we’ve ever had was for “that Irn Bru song” (‘Walking In The Air’) one Christmas. We did it off the cuff and it was great!” A passion for weddings also helps. As Mairi says, “When asked, I freely give my opinion on all aspects of clients’ weddings – we live and breathe weddings. It’s brilliant to see the culmination of months, sometimes years, of conversations about the music and the ceremony. I still get emotional seeing the couple exchange their vows and have to play through tears of joy sometimes...”
