Alastair Burn-Murdoch got bored with commercial photography and posed shoots – he discovered that personality shines through best when the subject doesn’t even know a shot’s being taken. He has specialised in wedding photography for almost a decade now, alongside wife Rose, who works as stylist, timekeeper, children’s entertainer and the rest, helping things flow smoothly and keeping everyone relaxed.
“Our style is basically reportage, although we do cover the traditional essentials,” Alastair explains. “The emphasis is on recording the day, mixing informal posed photos with realtime images and more dramatic shots.” With the posed shots taken luckily, the happy couple have more time to enjoy the day, leaving Alastair to do what he does best: “You get stylish, interesting and relevant photos without having to have a fixed ‘photo’ smile,” says Alastair. “I suppose the strangest compliment, which we often get, is ‘I hardly knew you were there’ – proof that a photographer doesn’t have to try to run a wedding to get the best results.”
Working from home suits both the couple and their customers. “We’re always happy to offer evening appointments. This tends to be when folk are free, and we are really not morning people... luckily very few weddings start at 9am!”
